You may restrict or focus your search results in a variety of ways. Limiting is an effective way to narrow search results that are too extensive or to focus on additional needs you may have, such as when the items were published.
To limit your search results once you have done a search, choose LIMIT OR SORT ITEMS option. You will be prompted with the following:
Language
Material Type
Words in the Author
Words in the Title
Words in the Subject
Words in the Publisher
Where Item is Located
Year of Publication
Sort by Year
You may use one or more of the different options in each limit. When there is an option menu box, click the down arrow to choose one of the selections, enter the desired terms if required.
Example:
A subject search on " Indians of North America" in MARQCAT finds over 1500 subjects with more than 5600 entries. To find those items that also discus Jesuits or the Catholic church:
- Select LIMIT, then WORDS IN THE SUBJECT from the "Words in..." pull down menu.
- Type catholic or jesuit* in the text entry box
Click on LIMIT/SORT ITEMS RETRIEVED USING ABOVE DATA. MARQCAT identifies which of the 5600+ entries in the original search have the word catholic or, because the * was used to truncate, the words jesuit, jesuits, or other variations of that word in their subject headings. This limit finds nearly 200 entries.
